I’ve always considered my role in government to be the most fulfilling. It allows me to influence the lives of young individuals and provide them with the promising futures they deserve.

As the Education Secretary, I strongly believe that one’s background should not determine their destiny. The opportunities one attains should not be limited by their address or their parents’ income. Equal opportunities should be accessible to every child, regardless of their location or school.

Unfortunately, many schools today are facing physical deterioration, with crumbling walls and ceilings supported by steel props, and classrooms that reflect a lack of importance placed on children. This represents the current state of education under the Conservative government.

Addressing these issues is a priority for the Labour party. That’s why today, I am outlining our plan to rectify this situation.

By the end of this term, every school and college in England that requires significant reconstruction will be free of hazardous conditions. Additionally, all rebuilding projects will be in progress for schools in need of renovation.

This initiative aims to ensure that every child learns in a safe environment, with classrooms that are conducive to learning and where every child feels valued. Progress is already underway, with 62 schools having already eliminated hazardous conditions for over 42,000 students. Over half of the schools requiring extensive reconstruction are in the process of being revamped.

Our focus is on realizing Labour’s vision for our children because it goes beyond just infrastructure; it impacts their future prospects.

Studies have shown that students in poorly maintained buildings have lower academic performance. Additionally, dilapidated schools not only affect academic achievement but also convey a message to students before the lesson even begins.

Children learn that their safety is not a priority, that their education is undervalued, and that they are not worth investing in. It is crucial for all children, especially those facing challenges, to feel welcomed and valued in their educational environment.

After years of neglect, our significant capital investment of £38 billion in education signals to children that they are valued, their education matters, and their future is a priority for the country.

Earlier this year, we introduced a 10-year Infrastructure Strategy to provide schools with long-term certainty. Funding for school maintenance will increase to nearly £3 billion annually until 2034-35.

In addition to rebuilding 500 schools, we have committed to reconstructing an additional 250 schools. These new structures will be designed for sustainability, with a focus on carbon neutrality, resilience to climate change, and enhanced access to natural surroundings.

Quality education cannot be provided in substandard facilities. We must ensure that children have the best opportunities, starting with safe and conducive learning environments.

Our children are the future innovators, professionals, and leaders. They deserve schools that align with our aspirations for them – schools that serve as pillars of our communities.

Every child entering a school should be met with possibilities, not dilapidated conditions. This is our strategy for national revitalization in action – a government that prioritizes children by providing them with classrooms they can take pride in.
