Selena Gomez recently shared in a video that her voice was affected by vaping, addressing ongoing discussions about changes in her voice over time. The U.S. singer, actor, and Rare Beauty makeup line founder admitted to heavy nicotine vaping, emphasizing the difficulty of quitting and warning against the habit. Gomez humorously acknowledged the transformation in her voice due to vaping and encouraged those struggling with similar issues to reconsider their choices.
While Gomez did not specify the duration of her vaping habit, she expressed her determination to stay vape-free despite the challenges. The artist has been transparent about her health battles, including her Lupus diagnosis in 2015, which she believes might have impacted her vocal cords. Additionally, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 and spoke publicly about her bipolar disorder diagnosis in the documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.”
Although health experts highlight the broader risks associated with vaping beyond nicotine, including potential effects on the vocal cords, formal clinical trials on vaping’s direct impact on vocal cords are currently lacking. Vaping products contain numerous chemicals, with over 1,500 unique substances identified by Health Canada. The long-term health consequences of vaping, such as lung damage, are still under investigation, indicating potential health hazards associated with vaping.
Public figures like Gomez raising awareness about the risks of vaping are crucial, according to health experts, as it helps dispel misconceptions about the safety of vaping. Vethanayagam emphasized the importance of stringent regulations on vaping products to combat what she describes as a looming epidemic. In Canada, efforts to restrict vaping flavors have been underway for five years, aiming to address the rising popularity of vaping among young people, but the timeline for implementation remains uncertain.
Representatives from N.B. Lung are currently engaging with policymakers in Ottawa to advocate for stricter regulations on the sale and use of tobacco products, including vapes, particularly concerning younger individuals. The ongoing dialogue around vaping underscores the importance of informed decision-making and regulatory measures to protect public health.
