Israeli airstrikes in a southern Lebanese town resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 12 individuals, including two children, during the early hours of Monday, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. This marked one of the most devastating days of Israeli bombardment in recent times, raising concerns about a potential resumption of Israeli military operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement in June intended to halt hostilities between the Israeli military and Hezbollah.

According to a woman claiming to be related to three of the deceased, one of the strikes targeted a residential building while children were preparing for school. The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at individuals observed transferring weapons in the vicinity of Kfar Rumman town. At the scene, Reuters journalists witnessed children’s schoolbooks scattered amidst the rubble of the demolished building, with rescue workers using heavy machinery to recover bodies trapped underneath.

Among the victims was eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat, who lost his mother, grandparents, and potentially his father in the attack, as reported by locals. While Mustafa was receiving medical treatment in the hospital for his injuries, rescue teams continued their search for his father’s body. Mona Farhat, a relative of Mustafa, expressed disbelief and defiance at the hospital, questioning the motives behind the attack and asserting their determination to remain on their land.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed that 11 people, including two children and four women, lost their lives in the residential building strike on Monday. Additionally, a separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the town resulted in the death of one medic and injuries to two other medics, according to the Health Ministry.

The airstrikes on the town occurred without prior online evacuation warnings from the Israeli military. Israel’s military claimed to have taken precautions to minimize harm to civilians through the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance. However, they acknowledged the reports of civilian casualties and stated that they were investigating the incidents.

In a separate incident, Hezbollah allegedly launched two explosive drones towards Israeli troops near the Ali al-Taher ridge in southeastern Lebanon. Israel had previously declared the clearance of Hezbollah fighters from the ridge, which reportedly led to intensified Israeli strikes on nearby towns where residents had returned following the ceasefire in June, as per Lebanese security officials.

The situation remains tense in southern Lebanon, with security officials anticipating further escalations in the region in the coming weeks. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon has resulted in significant casualties and destruction, with both sides continuing military actions despite previous ceasefire agreements.
