Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with multiple offenses, including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother, Tristan, has also been indicted for complicity in the crimes. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and have a background in kickboxing, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a request for extradition from the UK.

Having primarily resided in Romania since 2017, the Tates have been the subjects of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, focusing on allegations of human trafficking. Despite the accusations leveled against them, the brothers have consistently denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors in Romania assert that the Tates lured their victims by feigning romantic interest and marriage intentions before coercing them into producing explicit content for a webcam enterprise.

In response to the indictment, a legal representative for the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, vowed to meticulously assess all facets of the charges and challenge any deficiencies through the appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence in the face of the allegations. The Tate siblings are presently detained in the United States as a judge deliberates on the extradition request to the UK, where they are wanted on rape charges.

The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit, DIICOT, which is overseeing the investigation into the Tates, has not yet clarified whether they will seek extradition from the U.S. The legal system in Romania allows for trials in absentia, but the commencement of proceedings is typically delayed. Following the submission of the indictment to a preliminary court chamber, a judge will review the case files for compliance with the law, a process that can extend beyond the stipulated 60-day timeframe.

Notably, one of Andrew Tate’s victims was reportedly 15 years old when he initiated a relationship with her in the UK in 2012 before moving her to Bucharest, Romania, and exploiting her via physical and psychological coercion to create explicit online content. Tristan, according to DIICOT, played a role in the victim’s exploitation by using physical force. Prosecutors alleged that the brothers retained a considerable portion of the victim’s earnings, approximately $1.25 million US, derived from video chat activities, and attempted to launder the money by purchasing luxury vehicles.

While the Tate brothers had previously faced charges of human trafficking in Romania, the case was remanded to prosecutors by the Bucharest court of appeals in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views on women, had purportedly relocated to Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement. Both siblings have cultivated a significant following, predominantly young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine persona centered on fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
