Canada’s men’s basketball team will be without some key players during their upcoming bid to qualify for the 2027 FIFA World Cup. General manager Rowan Barrett announced the roster for the Americas qualifiers, featuring standout athletes like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort from the Atlanta Hawks.

The team, set to face Panama and Argentina, will also have the support of ambassadors RJ Barrett and Bennedict Mathurin. Notably absent will be NBA stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks, with Barrett citing various reasons for their non-participation, including injuries, fatigue, and contractual obligations.

Canada Basketball, currently ranked fifth globally, aims to secure a spot in the World Cup alongside other top teams. Barrett emphasized the importance of assembling a well-balanced and experienced team for the qualifiers, highlighting the significance of execution and toughness on the court.

Among the notable players, Alexander-Walker stands out for his remarkable performance in the previous season, earning the title of the NBA’s most improved player. Additionally, veteran forward Kelly Olynyk brings valuable experience to the team, having recently competed in the NBA finals.

Barrett expressed optimism about the team’s prospects and praised Olynyk’s dedication to the sport, noting his valuable leadership qualities. The upcoming game in Quebec City holds personal significance for Dort, a Montreal native, who is eager to showcase his skills in front of family and friends.

The Canadians are prepared for the challenges ahead, drawing on a pool of over 50 dedicated athletes to ensure a competitive edge in the qualifying rounds. The team’s focus remains on unity, strategy, and relentless pursuit of victory as they strive to secure their spot in the prestigious World Cup tournament.
