Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” upon being honored with a promotion within the Order of Canada on Friday. Gov. Gen. Louise Arbour at Rideau Hall officially bestowed upon Fox the companion level of the Order of Canada, with spectators rising and applauding his recognition.

According to Rideau Hall, Fox was elevated to the companion level in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and candid portrayal of living with Parkinson’s disease. Following the ceremony, Fox shared his sentiments with The Canadian Press, emphasizing his deep love for Canada, its values, and its progress over the years.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological condition characterized by tremors, stiffness, and slowness, often accompanied by depression and memory issues. Since publicly disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, Fox has been actively involved in fundraising for research on the disease and has openly shared his personal experiences to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals grappling with its symptoms.

Reflecting on advancements in Parkinson’s research in Canada, Fox highlighted the country’s role as an early testing ground for deep brain stimulation. He was among 51 individuals either inducted into or promoted within the Order of Canada on the same day. Arbour commended each honoree for their exceptional contributions, emphasizing the importance of using one’s talents to benefit others and enhance the common good.

Notable figures honored alongside Fox included Yusuf Altintas, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of British Columbia, and Nada Jabado, a McGill University professor recognized for her work in pediatric neuro-oncology. Additionally, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz was acknowledged for his efforts in facilitating international trade and promoting Canada’s economic welfare.

Furthermore, sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, known for her iconic bronze sculptures exploring themes of gender and heritage, was inducted as a member. Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Susanne Craig was also honored for her impactful work with renowned publications such as The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, and The Wall Street Journal.

Other honorees included Colin Roswell Clarke for his contributions to the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra program, Marcelle Dubois for her efforts in revitalizing Quebec playwriting, and Patrick Joseph Lahey, co-founder of Triton Submarines, recognized as a leading expert in submersibles and advocate for safe practices in deep-sea exploration.
