Four individuals lost their lives in a Gaza City displacement camp on Tuesday during an operation conducted by Israel’s defense minister to apprehend a senior Hamas figure. The arrested official, identified as the head of Hamas’s internal security service, was taken into custody following the raid, as confirmed by an Israeli security official to Reuters. The aftermath of the strike showed burnt and destroyed tents and belongings, with remnants of a damaged car visible in the area. Medical personnel reported that three children were among the casualties in the military operation, which also resulted in injuries and marked the fifth attack on the enclave in recent weeks, causing numerous casualties.

Witnesses recounted the tragic events, with Abu Al Abd, a Palestinian resident in the camp, pleading for mercy and highlighting the presence of children who were caught in the raid. The incident comes in the wake of recent warnings by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding targeted operations due to children flying kites into Israeli territory. Emphasizing the impact on innocent lives, Al Abd expressed distress over the situation and the toll it takes on children.

Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement on Telegram citing recent heightened attacks by Hamas against Israeli troops and civilians, justifying the strike as a necessary measure to neutralize the perceived threat posed by the targeted individual. The statement reiterated the IDF’s commitment to proactively combatting terrorist elements and dismantling their infrastructure to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.

Family members of the victims, such as Faiza al-Bahtini, shared their harrowing experiences of loss and trauma, with children left traumatized by the violence. Al-Bahtini, who had previously been displaced following a previous attack resulting in the death of her nephew, recounted the ongoing cycle of destruction and displacement faced by many families in the region.

Despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire initiated on Oct. 11, the Gaza Health Ministry reported over 1,300 fatalities, with Israeli strikes persisting even after the ceasefire came into effect. The military’s rationale for such operations revolves around preventing potential attacks by Hamas and other militant groups, citing the loss of four Israeli soldiers to militant assaults post-ceasefire.

Hamas condemned the latest attack as a grave violation of civilian lives, denouncing it as part of a broader pattern of aggression against Palestinians. The organization accused Israeli authorities of flouting agreements and called on international mediators to intervene and stop further violations, portraying the incident as a continuation of the brutal treatment faced by Palestinians despite peace initiatives.
