Marie Burge, a dedicated advocate for the people of Prince Edward Island, passed away at the age of 88 in Charlottetown. Throughout her life, she championed various causes, including workers’ rights and environmental conservation, striving to create a fair and just community.

In 1984, Burge played a key role in establishing the Cooper Institute, a non-profit organization focused on research, education, and community development. Colleague Joe Byrne praised her ability to inspire others to think differently and take on new challenges.

Before her involvement with the Cooper Institute, Burge was deeply engaged in community work. She taught at Kinkora High School after joining the Sisters of St. Martha in 1958. During a five-year stint with the Latin American Mission Program in the Dominican Republic, Burge and a friend, Sister Teresa Currie, risked their lives to protect a young man from execution by hiding him in their home during a period of political unrest.

Mary Murphy, another member of the Sisters of St. Martha, noted the profound impact of Burge’s mission work, which fueled her determination to advocate for marginalized groups upon her return. Burge’s fearlessness and ability to rally people together were widely recognized.

Burge was a staunch supporter of a basic income guarantee for Prince Edward Island, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and equitable distribution of resources. Her tireless activism earned her several accolades, including the Order of P.E.I. and prestigious medals.

Apart from her advocacy work, Burge was known for her infectious laughter and humility. She never sought recognition for her contributions, attributing the progress to collective efforts rather than individual achievements.

The New Democratic Party of P.E.I. also paid tribute to Burge, highlighting her unwavering dedication to building a community where no one is left behind. Her positive outlook and belief in the power of individuals to effect positive change will be dearly missed.
