The organizer of Fat Marmot Week, Katie Adler, shared insights in an interview about the event’s success. Dawn, a chubby yellow-bellied marmot with a penchant for rocks, emerged as the winner in Gothic, Colo. during the inaugural event at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Dawn not only won the popular vote but also topped the scales by nearly doubling his weight from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms, or around 5.5 to 13 pounds this summer.

According to Dawn’s online bio, he is known for his role in fathering baby marmots and indulging in licking salt and minerals off rocks. Katie Adler, the organizer, expressed her admiration for Dawn, describing him as a special marmot who enjoys eating rocks.

Apart from his victory, Dawn has become the unofficial ambassador for the Marmot Project, a long-term research initiative facing uncertainties due to funding cuts in the U.S. The project, launched in 1962, focuses on studying yellow-bellied marmots at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, making it the world’s second longest-running mammal study after Jane Goodall’s work in Tanzania.

Concerns loom over the project’s future as funding cuts, including a 20% reduction to the National Science Foundation, pose challenges in securing research grants. The Marmot Project has resorted to innovative public campaigns, such as the OnlyMarms initiative on OnlyFans, to raise awareness and financial support.

Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges the need for sustainable funding to continue its vital research on marmots. A petition has been initiated to urge Congress to reverse cuts to research funding. While these efforts are commendable, the project aims to secure long-term stability for its research endeavors.

Looking ahead, plans are in place for the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027, as the Marmot Project perseveres in its mission. Katie Adler hopes that through campaigns like these, the public will develop a deeper appreciation for the resilience and survival skills of marmots in challenging environments.
