Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is set to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida on October 1, taking along innovative Canadian technology. Living and working in space poses risks due to the human body not being suited for low gravity, potentially leading to health issues like blood clots. To address this concern, NASA has collaborated with the Canadian Space Agency to quantify the risks and ensure the safety of astronauts on the space station.

A Vancouver-based company, Response Biomedical, has developed technology called Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS) that NASA finds particularly valuable. This technology can quickly detect the presence of D-dimer, a protein fragment indicating blood clots, among other health conditions like heart attacks and infectious diseases. The efficient blood test can provide results within minutes, enhancing medical care not only in space but also on Earth, especially in remote areas where timely testing is crucial.

The portability and speed of these testing devices are significant advantages, as they can help streamline healthcare processes and improve patient outcomes. With the potential for ACTIS technology to be used in future space missions to the moon or Mars, this development showcases Canada’s expertise in advancing innovative solutions for space exploration. The selection of ACTIS for the International Space Station underscores the value and adaptability of Canadian technology in the global space exploration landscape.
