Rescue teams are currently conducting search operations for numerous individuals who remain unaccounted for along the Nepal-Tibet border. This follows a devastating disaster where a massive deluge of water and mud, several stories high, swept through local communities following a glacier collapse. According to reports from authorities in Nepal and China, the death toll has surpassed 390, with over 1,400 people missing. Additional sources state that at least 359 individuals have died, and close to 1,000 are unaccounted for, including citizens from various countries worldwide, due to the flash floods that occurred on Wednesday morning local time.

Amid the ongoing crisis, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand disclosed that there are 30 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet whose safety and whereabouts remain uncertain. Concerns have been raised regarding a Canadian couple, Dhaval and Megha Shah from Port Moody, B.C., who are among the missing. The couple was reportedly on a spiritual journey in Nepal, and the last contact with them was on Tuesday night while they were staying at Hotel Kailash. Efforts are being made by Canadian authorities to provide support, with Global Affairs Canada dispatching five consular officials to Kathmandu to assist Canadians and collaborate with local agencies. Additionally, the Nepal Tourism Board had initially reported 25 Canadians among the missing persons.

The catastrophic event has severely impacted the region, with steep valleys serving as vital economic links and transit routes now bearing the brunt of the disaster. Images depict buildings in Nuwakot covered in mud, debris entangled in trees and wires, buried vehicles, and survivors shocked and covered in mud. The unfolding situation has left many uncertainties, with the exact number of casualties and missing individuals still unknown.

In response to the crisis, the United Nations has allocated $2 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for medical services, shelter, and water provisions. The majority of the fatalities and missing persons are reported in Nepal, with a smaller number in Tibet. Chinese authorities have indicated that nearly 100 Chinese citizens are missing on the Nepal side. Search and rescue operations are being hindered by the destruction of numerous bridges and approximately 40 kilometers of damaged roads in Nepal.

As the rescue efforts continue, the focus is shifting towards providing relief to those affected by the floods. The Nepal Red Cross Society is leading large-scale relief operations in flood-affected areas, with efforts underway to support displaced individuals and villages. In Tibet, a mudslide near Gyirong Port has caused significant damage, with mud accumulation exceeding 1.5 meters in some areas and roads leading to the port severely affected.

Experts have linked the flash floods to a glacier avalanche triggered by warming temperatures and melting glaciers in the region. The impact of climate change has accelerated glacier melting rates across the Himalayan range, leading to increased vulnerabilities to natural disasters like flooding and landslides. Efforts are underway to address the immediate humanitarian needs of those affected by the disaster and to mitigate future risks posed by climate-related events.
