The Israeli government has issued a warning of escalating “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas stops the use of kites by Palestinians, including children, flying towards Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media, mentioned a recent discussion with Defence Minister Israel Katz regarding the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting also involved Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has cautioned Hamas to halt the launches immediately. Failure to comply would result in increased targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and the evacuation of the population from areas used as launch sites. Netanyahu stressed Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its communities and citizens’ security from threats posed by Hamas or any other entity in Gaza.
Despite the tensions, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa, flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis provides a temporary escape from the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Omar mentioned that flying kites brings joy in a place where happiness is scarce, and he builds kites himself, despite being aware of the risks associated with flying them.
In response to incidents before the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on southern Israel that initiated the conflict, Israeli authorities reported instances of burning kites and balloons from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including the deaths of two children, amidst ongoing violence.
Hamas condemned Netanyahu’s statements regarding kite-flying children, accusing Israel of aggression and disregarding international law. The group called for condemnation of Israel’s actions and urged adherence to a ceasefire agreement in Gaza by international mediators.
Omar expressed fear of flying kites due to the potential dangers posed by strikes, as his mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the impact of the conflict on children’s activities and sense of security. Despite the challenges, children continued flying their kites, seeking moments of joy amid the turmoil.
