The World Meteorological Organization announced on Thursday that the El Niño weather pattern is expected to strengthen further through 2027, potentially becoming the most powerful on record. Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that if the current trend continues, this El Niño could surpass any observed in the past four decades. The organization’s forecasts indicate a nearly 100% certainty of El Niño persisting until February 2027 due to exceptionally warm Pacific Ocean temperatures.

A robust El Niño can cause significant shifts in global rainfall and temperature patterns, leading to extreme weather events like typhoons. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the unprecedented scale of this El Niño, stating that the planet is experiencing uncharted territory with rising temperatures.

El Niño, characterized by periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific, occurs every two to seven years and typically lasts up to 12 months, impacting regions with intense rains and droughts, particularly in Latin America. The current El Niño has already affected tropical regions, leading to a severe food crisis in Central America’s Dry Corridor.

The World Meteorological Organization anticipates the peak of this El Niño towards the end of the year, with lingering effects expected into 2027, resulting in higher global temperatures. In response, the WMO is enhancing preparedness and early warning systems to support disaster management and climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, health, energy, and water resources.

Overall, the El Niño event is projected to have far-reaching implications well into the next year, prompting heightened vigilance and collaboration across various sectors to mitigate its impact.
