Get ready to bundle up as the second season of North of North returns to Ice Cove. The acclaimed comedy series, a collaboration between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, continues the story of Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman rebuilding her life post a well-publicized breakup. Season 1 was a global success, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and impressing critics with its blend of humor and poignant themes.
“We are drawn to comedy with depth. Laughter and tears go hand in hand for us,” shared Stacey Aglok MacDonald, co-creator and executive producer. The show received nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer in a Comedy for Lambe.
Reflecting on the unexpected success, co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed surprise at the show’s massive impact. “We sensed something special, but the magnitude of its success was astonishing,” she noted. MacDonald added, “We were overjoyed by it all.”
In Season 2, Siaja navigates the complexities of motherhood, work, dating, and strained relationships with her mother, Neevee (played by Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan). The season delves into Siaja’s quest for self-discovery amid family revelations and personal challenges.
The series upholds authenticity by featuring Inuit cast and crew and incorporating Inuit fashion influences from various Arctic regions. The production faced logistical hurdles, including coordinating handmade costumes and adapting to unique measurement techniques. Despite challenges, the team’s dedication to authenticity shines through in the show’s visual storytelling.
Season 2 promises new characters, unexpected plot twists, and deeper explorations of familiar faces. Fans can anticipate a blend of humor and heart, with the creators aiming for a bigger and bolder narrative. The upcoming season introduces fresh adventures and community dynamics, promising an exciting rollercoaster ride for viewers.
Returning cast members join new faces, including guest appearances by Canadian actor Bruce McCulloch and Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie, among others. The highly anticipated Season 2 of North of North premieres in Canada on Sept. 1 on APTN+ and later on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on Sept. 8. Following the Canadian release, the season will be available globally on Netflix in the fall.
