Despite the looming threat of a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian goods from August 19 onwards, Greer described the ongoing trade discussions with Canada as productive.
The U.S. Trade Representative highlighted that while the Canadians seem inclined towards a conciliatory approach, the U.S. is focused on executing President Trump’s trade policy. Talks between the two nations have intensified, with Canada pushing for the removal of the upcoming 50% tariff and addressing existing tariffs on sectors like automotive and steel. Recent proposals from the U.S. aimed at reducing some sectoral tariffs were deemed insufficient by Canadian sources.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the Canadian government not to compromise on dairy negotiations. Greer raised concerns about Canada’s retaliatory measures, particularly citing alcohol bans and tariffs, likening them to actions taken by China. In response, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Frank McKenna defended Canada’s stance, asserting that the country was merely responding to unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.
