Experts warn that the ongoing trade conflict between Canada and the United States will result in increased costs for consumers and businesses, affecting various sectors such as electronics, gaming, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Last year, Canada exported over $4 billion US worth of electronics equipment to the U.S., which will now face the new 50 per cent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on a wide range of goods. Notably, certain electrical boards and controllers constitute the highest export category subjected to these tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would reciprocate the U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar.
The trade dispute is expected to lead to higher prices, posing challenges for businesses on both sides of the border. Carol McGlogan, President and CEO of Electro-Federation Canada, expressed concerns about the devastating impact of the 50 per cent tariffs. She highlighted that 90 per cent of their exports go to the U.S., emphasizing that price increases will affect various sectors, including residential, educational, and commercial buildings.
According to Evan Light, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, the prices of products like gaming consoles and cell phones have already been increasing due to chip shortages and supply chain disruptions. He anticipates that the trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. will further elevate the prices of these items.
Andrew Bell, Chief Product Officer at Ottawa-based Kinaxis, noted that the tariffs could initially impact supply chains but would eventually translate into higher costs for consumers. He emphasized that challenges in the supply chain, including tariffs, lead to increased costs for components, as seen with companies like Nvidia announcing price hikes for AI chips.
Implications on AI Adoption
Bloomberg News recently reported that Nvidia is warning customers of potential price increases of up to 15 per cent for its artificial intelligence chips. Bell highlighted that such supply chain challenges could hinder AI adoption and deployment due to escalating costs in both the U.S. and Canada.
