A recent study reveals that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancer mortality compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, poses a greater exposure risk for individuals at high altitudes, such as those on flights.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on cancer mortality linked to radiation exposure. Flight attendants exhibited the highest percentage of radiation-related cancer deaths among more than 500 occupations, with pilots ranking second. The study highlighted significantly elevated odds of dying from various radiation-related cancers in these professions.
The researchers emphasized that neither group showed elevated mortality rates from non-radiation-related cancers, indicating that occupational radiation exposure likely drives the observed excess deaths. The study challenges the misconception that flight crews’ increased skin cancer risk stems from sunny layovers, suggesting that cockpit exposures may be more significant.
Flight attendants had approximately 50% higher odds of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had about 36% higher odds. The study acknowledged limitations in quantifying individual exposures and potential misclassifications of occupations on death certificates.
Factors like cosmic radiation, UV-A light exposure, and circadian disruption contribute to the complex risk environment for flight crews. The study underscored the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to address radiation risks among aircrews, including regular skin examinations and early mammograms for female personnel. Flight crew health providers are advised to maintain a vigilant approach to cancer detection in these high-risk groups.
