German authorities are probing the discovery of a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine.
In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe methods to dismantle everything facilitating the West’s support for Kyiv’s military capabilities. We are already taking action.”
The drone, carrying an unidentified explosive device, was found by an airport employee in the security area of the cargo operations zone near Leipzig airport’s south runway, classified as “critical infrastructure.” Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport for transporting weaponry, ammunition, arms, and other military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane signifies “an elevated level of risk” for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He described the incident as part of a “professional hybrid threat scenario” rather than the work of amateurs.
While German authorities are investigating the incident and have not disclosed the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence sources informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggest the drone likely belonged to the Russian government.
Responding cautiously, Berlin is enhancing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attribution. Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing fact-finding process, stating, “We are in the midst of gathering information. It would be inappropriate for a federal minister to speculate prematurely.”
Officials caution that Russia is employing drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations throughout Europe, especially in the lead-up to upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt highlighted the continuous hybrid warfare threats faced by Germany, including espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert actions by foreign entities aimed at destabilizing the country and instigating political and societal changes.
In a previous incident in 2024, U.S. and western intelligence uncovered a Russian plot to assassinate the CEO of German defense contractor Rheinmetall, a significant supplier of armaments to Ukraine. Additionally, German federal prosecutors arrested a suspected Russian spy in March for gathering intelligence on Berlin’s military support for Ukraine and defense industry details.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s online interference in Germany through a campaign known as Operation Overload, which aims to exploit emerging controversies within NATO member countries and Ukraine, particularly targeting Germany, France, and Ukraine. ISD reported that the campaign includes disinformation tactics impersonating news outlets, law enforcement agencies, and academics.
Dobrindt emphasized the susceptibility of German politics and society to such disinformation campaigns, especially during upcoming regional elections. Hans-Jakob Schindler from the Counter Extremism Project described the drone incident in Leipzig as an “aggressive escalation” of Russian interference, testing Germany’s response threshold.
Schindler raised concerns about the transition from hybrid warfare tactics to direct physical attacks, highlighting the need to define the boundary between defense and conventional conflict. Lavrov’s recent statements signal a change in Russia’s stance on interference in Western nations, hinting at a more aggressive approach against Europe, the West, and NATO.
The escalating tensions underscore the urgent need to address the evolving nature of hybrid warfare and the potential consequences of such aggressive actions on international security.
