Ladan Jahankha finds great fulfillment in being part of her local running group, as it represents a realization of her aspirations. Having resided in Iran before relocating to St. John’s in 2022, where women face significant limitations in sports participation, Jahankha cherishes the newfound freedom she experiences. She expressed gratitude for living her dreams in her current environment and feeling overjoyed. Reports from the Center for Human Rights in Iran highlight the stringent dress codes enforced on Iranian women athletes for public sporting events, with many competitions barred to female participants by the government.

The BBC reported in December that two marathon organizers were apprehended for permitting women without hijabs to join the race. Jahankha shared with CBC News her past attempts to engage in running while living in Tehran, lamenting the restrictions that hindered her pursuit. Now employed as a teacher in St. John’s, she reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her passion. Through a Facebook group for runners, Jahankha found a supportive community, including a coach and fellow beginners who aided her progress.

Despite ongoing tensions related to the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha emphasized how running has become a means of alleviating stress and anxiety for her during difficult times. She expressed that running has integrated into her daily routine and become an integral part of her life. Recently, Jahankha partook in a Pride race alongside her family and plans to engage in another 5-kilometer race on August 16. She conveyed her appreciation to Canada for providing opportunities that were previously inaccessible due to restrictions in her homeland, expressing contentment in the freedom she now enjoys.
