The Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness is celebrating its 25th anniversary while emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and community among individuals facing homelessness. Chuck Lazenby, the organization’s executive director, highlighted the significance of people feeling valued and included in society to address homelessness effectively.

The Unity Project originated in 2001 during a demonstration led by poverty activists and individuals experiencing homelessness in Campbell Memorial Park in London. This event evolved into a long-term initiative dedicated to providing shelter and support services to those in need.

Currently, the Unity Project operates a shelter in Old East Village and is striving to establish a larger facility to accommodate more individuals. Lazenby pointed out the challenges faced by marginalized communities due to rising living costs and stagnant social assistance rates, underscoring the critical need for affordable housing and adequate support systems.

Moreover, the prevalence of potent drugs has heightened the complexity of addressing the needs of homeless individuals, necessitating comprehensive solutions that encompass both immediate assistance and long-term stability measures. Lazenby emphasized that despite evolving circumstances, the fundamental solutions to homelessness remain rooted in secure housing and adequate income support.

The Unity Project’s enduring commitment to empowering marginalized individuals underscores the ongoing battle against homelessness and poverty, emphasizing the need for sustained community efforts and systemic support mechanisms.
