Moroccan authorities apprehended over 100 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, following heightened security measures on both sides of the border due to social media calls for another mass migrant crossing. This incident occurred after a previous surge of more than 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta, causing tensions within the European Union and fueling anti-immigration sentiments globally, resulting in the deaths of 96 people during the attempt.

According to a source from Morocco’s Interior Ministry, the detained group comprised 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens near Fnideq, a city across from Ceuta. Reports from Spanish news agency EFE indicated that Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse migrant groups near the border, with visible police presence in the vicinity.

In response to the situation, Ceuta saw Spanish soldiers guarding supermarkets and increased police presence on its streets, with a calmer atmosphere compared to the aftermath of the previous crossing attempt. The Spanish government has taken further security measures, including the deployment of additional personnel and the installation of a maritime barrier to prevent future incidents.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated the commitment to restoring normalcy and preventing similar events, emphasizing that irregularly entering migrants would not be permitted to stay in Ceuta or mainland Spain, except in exceptional cases. Authorities in Morocco and Spain have taken proactive steps to prevent further mass crossings, including reinforced security along the border and restrictions on transportation from various cities.

Despite the challenges faced by migrants, some individuals cautioned against attempting dangerous crossings, highlighting the risks involved and advocating for caution and patience in seeking a better future. The complex situation in Ceuta underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the need for sustainable solutions to address the plight of migrants in the region.
