U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his strong support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, stating that removing him from his position would be a significant error. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership, particularly highlighting his successful management of the recent World Cup tournament. Trump emphasized the importance of Infantino’s continued presence for the future success and profitability of FIFA.

Trump’s endorsement of Infantino came shortly after UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF jointly criticized Infantino’s handling of a proposed sale of World Cup commercial rights. The three confederations accused Infantino of breaching trust through deceptive actions and called for an independent review of the situation. They emphasized the need for leadership in football that prioritizes unity and service to the sport.

Despite the backlash Infantino has faced following his abandoned plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, some federations, including CAF and CONCACAF member Mexico, have expressed their support for him. In response to the criticism, FIFA defended Infantino, denouncing what it described as coordinated efforts to undermine his leadership. The organization called for adherence to its statutes and democratic procedures in addressing any challenges to Infantino’s position.

While certain federations have voiced their lack of confidence in Infantino, citing concerns over his actions, others, including several Asian nations and Mexico, continue to stand by him. The ongoing debate surrounding Infantino’s leadership underscores the divisions within the global football community regarding his tenure as FIFA President.
