Authorities have deemed the death of a four-year-old girl and the injuries sustained by two toddlers at a residence in southern Manitoba on Sunday as suspicious, according to the RCMP.

Officers from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to a call at a residence in Long Plain First Nation following a report of a young child in distress with injuries around 8 a.m. on Sunday, as stated in a news release by the RCMP on Tuesday.

The four-year-old was declared deceased at the residence, confirmed the police.

Additionally, two more children, aged one and two, were transported to the hospital from the residence, said the police. One child was in critical condition, while the other was stable; both are currently in stable condition.

RCMP has assumed control of the investigation due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the four-year-old’s death and the severe injuries sustained by the other two children.

Superintendent Rob Lasson, who heads the Manitoba RCMP major crime services, described the incident as “extremely concerning” and mentioned that the community would be seeking answers regarding the events that unfolded in the household.

Lasson expressed his commitment to working closely with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service and community leaders to provide assistance and support to Long Plain residents.
