A six-year-old boy named DeMari Disna from Steinbach is confined indoors for the remainder of his summer following an accident involving an electric bike. While out with his older sisters and friends on a walking trail near their residence, DeMari was struck by a youth riding an e-bike, resulting in a collision.

DeMari’s mother, Shannon Broesky, rushed him to Bethesda Regional Health Centre, where they endured a 19-hour wait to have a soft cast placed on his left leg, which was found to have both the tibia and fibula broken. Subsequently, DeMari was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for a hard cast installation.

Despite the ordeal, DeMari is reportedly handling the situation well, though his energetic nature has been curtailed due to the injury. Shannon Broesky, his mother, is advocating for enhanced regulations concerning electric bikes following the incident, citing previous near-misses she’s observed but not been overly concerned about until it impacted her son.

The Manitoba government is currently in the process of developing legislation regarding battery-powered bikes and scooters, with Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor expressing concern over the incident and emphasizing the government’s commitment to reviewing and updating regulations for public safety.

Steinbach’s mayor, Earl Funk, expressed his dismay at DeMari’s injuries, highlighting the potential dangers posed by fast e-bikes if operated by inexperienced individuals. While the incident marks the first reported injury in Steinbach, Funk noted multiple close calls previously encountered and underscored the need for stricter regulations and improved public education on using these vehicles.

In contrast, the City of Morden has already implemented its own bylaws in June, mandating helmet use, compliance with traffic signals, and prohibiting e-device use on sidewalks. Mayor Nancy Penner of Morden stressed the necessity for comprehensive guidelines at the provincial level, particularly in determining the appropriate age for operating e-bikes and e-scooters to ensure consistency and safety.

Furthermore, Penner expressed willingness to enforce a province-wide age restriction, citing concerns from parents about their children’s safety and knowledge of road rules. Meanwhile, Shannon Broesky, DeMari’s mother, has opted for accountability over confrontation, expressing forgiveness towards the teen involved in the accident and emphasizing the importance of understanding and learning from such incidents rather than harboring resentment.

Overall, the incident involving DeMari has sparked calls for stricter regulations and heightened awareness surrounding the use of electric bikes and scooters to prevent similar accidents in the future.
