Nicole Robichaud, a lawyer and caregiver in Ottawa, shared her heartfelt experience with a folk art calendar that has been a cherished tradition in her family for almost three decades. The calendar, gifted to her mother annually during Christmas, held special significance in their holiday celebrations.

Despite the joyous memories associated with the calendar, their family faced a challenging time when Nicole’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015. Over the years, as the disease progressed, Nicole witnessed her mother’s declining health and cognitive abilities. Despite the changes, the folk art calendar remained a constant presence in their lives, symbolizing continuity and love.

As her mother’s condition worsened, Nicole found solace in continuing the tradition of ordering the calendar each year. Even though her mother could no longer engage with the calendar as before, Nicole felt that the act of sharing the pictures and memories with her mother provided a sense of purpose and connection amidst the difficulties of caregiving.

Through the simple yet meaningful gesture of gifting the calendar, Nicole expressed her deep-rooted belief in the power of love and tradition to transcend physical limitations. Despite the challenges posed by Alzheimer’s, the calendar served as a beacon of hope, comfort, and continuity in their evolving relationship.

As Nicole navigated the complexities of caring for her mother, the annual ritual of the calendar purchase became a source of spiritual grounding and positivity, offering a glimpse of light in the midst of darkness. Looking ahead, she eagerly anticipated turning the page to 2024, embracing the tradition that symbolized enduring love and resilience in the face of adversity.
