Rescue teams in western Colombia are engaged in a frantic race against time as they sift through debris left by a powerful earthquake, with estimates suggesting the death toll has surpassed 250. The 7.4-magnitude quake, the strongest to hit Colombia in years, struck the heartland of the country’s coffee region, causing widespread destruction to buildings and infrastructure.

In the aftermath of the disaster, families anxiously await news of their loved ones amidst the rubble. Emergency responders, aided by heavy machinery and working tirelessly through the night, are engaged in painstaking efforts to locate and rescue any survivors trapped beneath the wreckage.

The official death toll stands at 126, with over 1,400 individuals reported injured according to the United Nations. However, local sources now indicate that the number of casualties could be as high as 254 as rescue operations intensify and communication networks are gradually restored.

The seismic event has resulted in nearly 5,000 homes sustaining damage, while numerous buildings have collapsed, leaving hundreds of residences in ruins. In Cali, residents have been displaced, with some forced to cook outdoors as they come to terms with the devastation. The city’s hospital complex suffered structural failures, leading to the evacuation of patients and rendering parts of the facility unusable.

In Pereira, another severely impacted area, neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, prompting residents and volunteers to join forces in search and rescue missions. The loss and destruction have left the community reeling, with survivors recounting harrowing tales of loss and displacement.

The earthquake has also disrupted critical infrastructure, resulting in the closure of several airports and the impairment of numerous roadways. Basic services such as electricity, water, and healthcare have been severely affected, posing additional challenges to ongoing relief efforts.

International aid is beginning to flow into the region, with the United States and the Inter-American Development Bank pledging financial support for emergency relief and reconstruction. However, with communication limitations hindering the assessment of the full extent of the damage, authorities anticipate that it may take several days to ascertain the complete impact of the catastrophe.
