Molly, an African spurred tortoise, was discovered meandering at a slow pace near a vast wetland in the Canadian prairie, sparking confusion at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, expressed surprise at encountering the 36-kilogram tortoise, a species native to the Sahara desert, in an unfamiliar habitat. After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, Malchuk and her colleagues embarked on a search, eventually locating Molly with the help of an app called iNaturalist.

The staff at Oak Hammock were taken aback by the unexpected presence of the tortoise, as they had initially assumed the sightings were of a smaller, local snapping turtle. The discovery of Molly led to a rescue mission, during which she was provided with food and care by the marsh staff. Efforts to reunite Molly with her owners were successful, with her family collecting her from the marsh in late July.

Molly’s adventure raised questions about how she ended up 20 kilometers away from home, with theories suggesting she may have escaped through a gap in her family’s fence. Despite the mystery surrounding her journey, the staff at Oak Hammock were relieved to see Molly safely returned to her rightful owners. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters in unexpected locations.
