Chad Dupuis, a resident of Slave Lake, Alberta, has been employed by Alberta Parks since 2017. He admits that his close proximity to forest life had caused him to underestimate the presence of wildlife in their natural habitat.

In a bustling Sunday at Carson Pegasus Provincial Park, where Dupuis serves as the maintenance supervisor, the team diligently readied over 120 camping sites for incoming visitors. Despite the physically demanding tasks of park maintenance, such as waste collection and fire pit cleaning, Dupuis was in high spirits as the day concluded.

Returning to his Winnebago after a long day’s work under the scorching sun, Dupuis was looking forward to cooking a steak for dinner. However, upon entering his mobile abode, he discovered that the meat he had prepared was missing. His initial thoughts drifted to a recent encounter with a young black bear near his campsite.

Amidst the confusion of the vanished steak, Dupuis pondered various scenarios, considering the possibility of human intrusion or theft. His investigative gaze fell upon a torn window screen, signaling a potential entry point for the mysterious culprit.

Reflecting on his experiences living and working in the forest, where he had encountered various wildlife species, Dupuis accepted the loss of his anticipated meal as a reminder of the untamed nature of the animals. His contemplation was interrupted by a faint growl from beneath the bed, prompting him to cautiously investigate.

To his surprise, a pine marten, resembling a cat-sized weasel, emerged from the hiding spot, growling as it scurried up a nearby tree. Relieved by the creature’s departure, Dupuis retreated back into his camper, resigned to a simple meal for the night.

As he recounted the peculiar incident, Dupuis anticipated sharing the tale with his colleagues, relishing the humorous twist in his forest encounters.
