An acclaimed B&B and café in Alburgh, Norfolk, has ceased operations, delivering a significant blow to the community. The owner attributed the closure to the establishment’s challenging location, which hindered attracting passing customers.

The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, shut its doors after a successful two and a half years under the stewardship of Sonya Resemblance. Despite serving a loyal clientele whom she described as “beautiful people,” the business struggled due to its location.

This closure reflects a broader trend affecting the hospitality industry across Britain, with numerous pubs and eateries facing closure annually due to increasing costs and evolving consumer behaviors.

For instance, the beloved White Horse in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently, adding to the growing list of casualties in the industry. Pub owners have expressed concerns about the future of the sector, with significant cost escalations leading to closures.

The Dove Inn had received recognition for its excellence, being named one of the UK’s top 50 cafés at the 2025 Small Business Awards. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, not only provided quality meals but also contributed to the local economy by creating jobs, offering training opportunities, and organizing events promoting mental well-being.

The establishment had also garnered accolades at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk, winning titles such as Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.

A standout feature of the inn was its entirely gluten-free menu, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions. Sonya expressed pride in offering a safe dining experience for those facing challenges in dining out.

In an announcement about the closure, Sonya thanked patrons for their support and acknowledged the positive impact the business had on the community. She emphasized the importance of the social space the inn provided for mental health and expressed regret that despite their efforts, the location posed insurmountable challenges.

The decision to close followed an earlier warning from the business about the difficulties it faced amidst the broader retail and hospitality pressures. Despite efforts from loyal customers to support the business, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16, prompting an outpouring of supportive messages.

One patron expressed sadness about the closure but hoped for the possibility of a comeback in the future.
