Labour leader Keir Starmer emphasized the significance of the Gaza peace agreement, stating that it presents a historic opportunity for a two-state solution after decades of conflict. He called on all parties involved to embrace this chance to bring an end to a troubling period in history.

In a parliamentary address, Starmer acknowledged the immense suffering endured by hostage families and civilians in Gaza over the past two years, describing it as a “living hell.” He underscored the monumental task of rebuilding the war-torn region but expressed optimism about the fragile peace in the Middle East, which he described as a moment of relief for the global community.

Starmer defended the UK’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state, attributing it to fostering peace despite facing criticism for the timing of the move. He highlighted the recent peace deal as a significant step forward, marking the first real opportunity for a two-state solution since the Oslo Accords.

Speaking on behalf of the UK, Starmer commended US President Donald Trump for his role in the peace deal while emphasizing the UK’s ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire, release hostages, and provide aid to Gaza. He stressed the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the peace plan.

Additionally, Starmer affirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the reconstruction of Gaza and facilitating humanitarian aid delivery to alleviate the dire conditions in the region. He reiterated the necessity of a two-state solution for lasting peace in the Middle East, emphasizing the coexistence of a safe Israel and a viable Palestinian state.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, with personal ties to Gaza, reflected on the ceasefire with a somber tone, acknowledging the devastation and loss of life while advocating for a peaceful future through a two-state solution. She urged the Prime Minister to uphold the promise of establishing a Palestinian state, emphasizing the importance of achieving lasting peace in the region.

In response, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his dedication to working tirelessly towards realizing a two-state solution, building upon the recent peace agreement to secure a sustainable resolution.
