A mother determined to save money successfully accumulated £1,370 by adhering to a straightforward habit — she exclusively uses cash for transactions. Nicola Richardson, a teacher and mother of two from North Yorkshire, has steadfastly followed this practice for the past ten years, only transitioning to card payments during the Covid pandemic when contactless transactions became favored.
“I operate on a weekly budget, withdrawing £130 to cover all expenses ranging from groceries to fuel, household necessities, and everything required for my two sons and pet cat,” she explains. “Avoiding card usage prevents impulsive purchases.”
Richardson, aged 39, believes that handling physical cash makes money more tangible, contrasting it with the ease of tapping a card which can lead to overspending. She emphasizes, “Having only £50 in my purse prevents me from buying unnecessary items. I resist temptations like shopping at Lidl because I don’t carry the money.”
She expresses, “This uncomplicated rule is highly effective; it helps curb my spending. It has become a natural part of my routine, requiring no extra thought.”
Balancing the responsibilities of raising two boys aged eight and ten, Richardson demonstrates prudence in budgeting by managing to complete a weekly grocery shop for under £50.
Additionally, Richardson challenges herself with spending limits, aiming for “no buy” days, implementing tenner Tuesday and fiver Friday rituals, where she sets aside notes from her purse into a savings binder. By participating in the penny challenge last year, wherein she saved incrementally starting from 1p on January 1, she saved a total of £667.95 in loose change, accumulating a total of £1,370 for future household expenses.
Inspired by social media trends like fiver Fridays, Richardson emphasizes the importance of consistency in saving habits. She stresses the significance of being prudent with money, advocating for open discussions about financial matters. Memories hold more value for her than material possessions, highlighting the importance of aligning spending with personal priorities to enhance overall life satisfaction.
Richardson, who manages a YouTube channel called NicolaatTheFrugalCottage, shares her money-saving tips, encouraging individuals to track expenses diligently, set specific saving goals, evaluate purchases thoughtfully, and engage in popular saving challenges.
By adopting these strategies, Richardson not only allocates leftover cash for small indulgences like coffee or treats but also avoids succumbing to unnecessary spending influenced by social media trends. She underscores the significance of prioritizing personal preferences over material possessions to lead a more fulfilling life.
