A prominent pharmacist has advised individuals who receive a positive Covid test result to remain at home for a minimum of five days to curb the transmission of two highly contagious new strains of the virus. Known as Stratus and Nimbus, these recent Covid variants are causing concern among health experts due to a common symptom observed in many infected individuals – a hoarse or “razor blade” sore throat.
George Sandhu, the deputy superintendent of Well Pharmacy, is emphasizing the importance of getting tested for Covid if experiencing typical symptoms as infection rates continue to climb. This reminder comes after numerous Britons were previously required to stay home and work remotely during the global pandemic lockdowns.
Sandhu is advocating for widespread awareness of Covid signs and symptoms, which led to 447 new cases in the week ending September 24, marking a 22% increase from the previous week according to government data. Hospital admissions also rose by 15.6%, with 157 individuals admitted in the week ending August 31, bringing the total hospitalized patients to 1,162.
Resembling common cold and flu viruses, Covid spreads through respiratory droplets released when breathing, sneezing, or coughing. As the new variants continue to circulate, Sandhu urges adherence to the latest NHS guidelines to limit transmission across the country.
Similar to other respiratory infections, Covid typically presents with symptoms such as a high temperature, persistent cough, and loss of taste or smell. Notably, the Stratus variant is associated with a hoarse voice as an early sign, while those with the Nimbus variant often report a sensation of a razor blade in the throat.
Most individuals testing positive for Covid receive confirmation through antigen tests and are advised to follow isolation protocols. NHS guidelines recommend that adults isolate for five days after a positive test result, while the isolation period for individuals under 18 is three days, considering their lower infectious period relative to adults. For those in contact with vulnerable individuals, especially those with weakened immune systems, a ten-day isolation period is recommended.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, individuals with Covid are generally no longer infectious after five days. Remaining hydrated is crucial during Covid infection to alleviate symptoms like headaches and nasal congestion. Well Pharmacy not only provides Covid antigen tests but also offers a Covid booster vaccine service.
Sandhu stresses the importance of seeking a Covid test at local pharmacies to confirm the presence of the virus, especially during the winter months when differentiating between Covid, colds, and flu can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms. Adhering to NHS guidelines, individuals testing positive should isolate, avoid contact with others, and wait until testing negative. Younger individuals may test negative within three days, while adults are advised to wait five days before resuming contact with others. Sandhu underscores the collective responsibility of following guidelines and avoiding crowded places when testing positive for Covid.
