A weight loss specialist suggests a particular bedtime drink that differs from the usual recommendations like lemon water, protein shakes, or green tea. Professor Franklin Joseph, who heads the medical team at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, highlights the benefits of plain, unsweetened kefir for enhancing overnight fat burning.

Professor Joseph emphasizes the significant impact of evening beverage choices on metabolism during sleep. He notes that opting for kefir before bed can positively influence metabolism without causing blood sugar spikes or disrupting sleep patterns.

Kefir, a fermented milk beverage rich in natural probiotics, light protein, and bioactive compounds, is identified by Prof Joseph as an optimal choice for individuals aiming to shed excess weight, particularly stubborn belly fat.

According to the professor, kefir supports gut health, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and promotes recovery while sleeping. Unlike sugary yogurts or protein shakes, unsweetened kefir has a low glycemic load, preventing insulin spikes that can hamper fat burning and disturb sleep quality.

Research indicates that fermented foods like kefir can enhance insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and improve gut health, all essential factors in fat loss. Additionally, kefir may contribute to better sleep quality by affecting the gut-brain axis, a communication network between the digestive system and central nervous system.

Professor Joseph recommends consuming 100 to 150ml of plain kefir approximately 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. He advises against sweetened varieties and pairing kefir with sugary snacks or carbohydrates to ensure the body remains calm, nourished, and primed for overnight repair.

While acknowledging that kefir alone will not burn fat, Prof Joseph suggests that when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, it can potentially tip the scales in favor of weight loss.
