A senior US official commended the UK and an important aide of Keir Starmer for their significant contributions to the ongoing Gaza peace summit. Steve Witkoff, the Middle East envoy for former President Donald Trump, lauded Jonathan Powell, the Prime Minister’s adviser, for his remarkable efforts in the peace-building process. Witkoff’s statements contrast with those of the American ambassador to Israel, who criticized a UK minister for a similar assertion.

In a social media post today, Witkoff acknowledged the crucial role played by the United Kingdom in facilitating and coordinating the steps leading to the current historic moment in Israel. He specifically highlighted the outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication of National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson disclosed on Sky News that the UK had played a pivotal role behind the scenes in shaping the peace negotiations. She emphasized the complexity of the diplomatic efforts involved and acknowledged the significant role played by the US government in reaching this stage.

However, US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, responded by dismissing the Cabinet minister’s remarks on social media, labeling her as “delusional.” He credited Donald Trump for setting the record straight.

Later today, Keir Starmer is set to describe the Gaza peace summit in Egypt as a crucial step towards ending the prolonged conflict and violence in the region. He flew to Sharm El-Sheikh last night to participate in the signing ceremony of the peace agreement with US President Donald Trump. The summit is expected to be attended by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Starmer is anticipated to emphasize the commitment to seize the opportunity for lasting peace and a secure future for the entire region. He will underscore the importance of the next phase of talks to ensure the full implementation of the peace plan for the benefit of both sides in the conflict.

During the summit, Starmer is expected to announce a £20 million aid package from the UK, part of a broader commitment of £116 million, to support Gaza. This aid aims to provide essential water, sanitation, and hygiene services to tens of thousands of civilians in the war-ravaged region.
