The Home Office has shared a video of the initial collective deportations of migrants who arrived in the UK by small boats under an agreement with France. In the past week, two group flights have repatriated 19 individuals to France, with the most recent flight landing in France today before heading to Eastern Europe.
Video footage from the first group flight depicts individuals boarding the plane with their identities concealed. This action follows the removal of seven individuals from the UK last month as per a deal made with French President Emmanuel Macron during the summer.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood cautioned individuals contemplating entering Britain via small boats to reconsider their decision. She highlighted the stark difference with the failed Rwanda initiative by the previous government, emphasizing that the current approach has swiftly led to the return of 26 individuals through the partnership with France.
As the government faces mounting pressure to address the small boat migration issue and with Nigel Farage’s Reform party gaining popularity, Ms. Mahmood, now in charge of the Home Office, is expected to adopt a firm stance on securing the UK’s borders.
Ms. Mahmood emphasized the importance of halting these perilous crossings that endanger lives and enrich criminal organizations. She underscored the efficiency of the recent returns compared to the prolonged and ineffective Rwanda scheme, sending a clear message that illegal entrants risk detention and deportation.
Under the UK-France agreement, asylum seekers embarking on the dangerous Channel crossing will be sent back to France while an equal number of individuals with valid claims will be permitted entry into the UK. Additional flights to France under this trial program are set to occur in the upcoming days and weeks.
Nine individuals arrived in the UK from France this week through the newly established legal pathway after undergoing security assessments. According to Home Office data, a total of 18 individuals have entered the UK while 26 have departed under this arrangement.
