Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning to the West, indicating a potential forceful reaction should Donald Trump follow through on his recent threat. The US president is considering providing Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow fails to actively pursue peace efforts. This move, as suggested by Kremlin associates, would mark a significant escalation, granting Ukraine the capability to strike deep into Russian territory.

During a press briefing on Air Force One, Trump hinted at the possibility of supplying Kyiv with the weapons, stating, “We’ll see… I may.” He mentioned a potential discussion with Putin, expressing that if the conflict persists, he would consider sending Tomahawks, labeling it as an aggressive step in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

The Kremlin has expressed deep concern over Trump’s comments, with Putin’s allies responding with apprehension. Dmitry Peskov, a key figure known for Kremlin-aligned messaging, described the situation as “very dramatic,” with tensions mounting from various directions. Russia has previously cautioned the US against arming Ukraine with such advanced weaponry, foreseeing a sharp escalation in the conflict and a strain on US-Russia relations.

Trump’s ultimatum follows a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky, where Zelensky reportedly requested the missiles to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities against Russian incursions. The Tomahawk missiles, with a range of 2,500 km and a price tag of up to £3m each, could potentially place Moscow within striking distance, offering Ukraine a strategic advantage in targeting Russian military and energy assets from afar.

Peskov also hinted at a potential Russian response, mentioning the deployment of older Tomahawk versions capable of carrying nuclear payloads. This veiled threat underscores the gravity of the situation, as tensions continue to mount. Moreover, Russian media figures have drawn parallels to the Cuban Missile Crisis, warning of dire consequences should the Tomahawks reach Ukraine.

Putin himself has voiced concerns over the possible supply of Tomahawks to Ukraine, emphasizing that it would jeopardize the positive trajectory of US-Russia relations. The Russian leader indicated that such a move could lead to the deterioration of their ties, highlighting the significance of the decision-making process.
