An urgent warning has been issued concerning Android and iPhone users regarding the use of unofficial chargers. Recent concerns have emerged due to the prevalence of devices being sold without chargers, leaving consumers to purchase adapters separately. While the cost of official chargers can be as high as £20, many are turning to cheaper alternatives available online for under £8.

However, consumer watchdog Which? has cautioned against these discounted options, citing potential safety hazards. After conducting tests on chargers bought from various online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, and eBay, Which? discovered alarming results. Nine chargers were found to pose electric shock risks due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as fire or explosion hazards.

In a concerning case, a plug resembling an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter for £11.99 was found to be a counterfeit product despite its packaging displaying Apple branding. Additionally, some chargers lacked essential UK safety markings and featured poorly designed internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

This investigation by Which? highlights ongoing issues with unsafe electrical products sold through online marketplaces. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical products can have, calling for stricter product safety laws and enforcement measures for online platforms.

Responding to these concerns, Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety and stated that non-compliant products are removed from its platform. B&Q also pledged to prioritize product safety and ensure recalled items are not available for sale.

Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While official products may come at a higher price, experts warn that the potential dangers of using unauthorized chargers far outweigh any cost savings.
