A woman in Derby, Laura McPherson, has been ordered to repay £30,000 after deceiving her boyfriend into believing she had terminal cancer to fund a breast enhancement surgery. Laura fabricated a complex lie involving multiple types of cancer, misled her daughter, and fabricated stories of receiving medical treatment at various hospitals.
She convinced her partner, Jon Leonard, to provide financial support for her supposed treatments, including fake medical expenses in Austria and a fabricated need for chemotherapy. Despite Jon’s efforts to seek genuine medical help, Laura persisted with her deceit, diverting his money towards personal expenses like cosmetic procedures and wellness treatments abroad.
Jon, known for raising significant funds for cancer charities, was defrauded of £25,000 by Laura. Additionally, he had gifted her a £30,000 Rolex watch to mark a milestone in her fake cancer journey. Laura was directed by the Derby Crown Court to reimburse £30,714 by a specified deadline, with plans to sell a watch to cover the amount.
Although Laura avoided jail time, she received a two-year community order earlier this year. Jon expressed relief that the deception had come to light, revealing that Laura had fabricated cancer-related stories since her school days. The court condemned Laura’s actions as calculated and cruel, causing emotional and financial harm to Jon.
Prosecutors detailed how Laura manipulated Jon for financial gain over a five-year period by falsely claiming cancer diagnoses and treatment needs. The court learned of instances where Laura’s lies were exposed, such as messages indicating financial requests for weight loss therapy disguised as medical expenses. Jon’s realization of the deception peaked when Laura feigned medical treatment on New Year’s Eve, 2021, leading to the unraveling of her elaborate hoax.
