Roblox faces accusations of being a haven for predators as a lawsuit is filed by a US attorney general against the online gaming platform. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman is urging Roblox Corporation to enhance safety measures for minors, including improved age verification and content filters. The legal action comes amidst growing concerns over the platform’s alleged failure to adequately protect children.

Courtney Norris, a mother of three from Kentucky, expressed her initial belief that Roblox was a secure gaming option for her kids, only to later realize its risks. The lawsuit is part of a series of legal challenges against Roblox, with similar cases in Louisiana and Iowa highlighting disturbing incidents involving minors and adult predators on the platform.

In response to the allegations, Roblox defended its safety protocols, stating the presence of advanced AI models and a dedicated team monitoring content around the clock. The company emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance safety, including the introduction of new safeguards like facial age estimation. With over 111 million daily users, Roblox underlined its commitment to implementing strict safety defaults for younger users.

Roblox restricts communication for users under 13, barring direct messaging outside of games and experiences unless parental controls are adjusted. The platform employs text filters to block inappropriate content and prohibits personal information sharing and explicit conversations. Despite Roblox’s safety measures, the Kentucky lawsuit asserts that fundamental safety controls are lacking.

Critics argue that Roblox fails to adequately educate users and parents about potential risks on the platform, warning that its child-friendly appearance masks underlying dangers. Attorney General Coleman condemned the platform as a breeding ground for predators, citing instances of children being exposed to harmful content and contacted by strangers through third-party chat applications.

Norris, echoing concerns shared by many parents, described Roblox as a seemingly safe space for children’s gaming, only to discover its complexities and risks. The lawsuit alleges that Roblox’s insufficient protections violate consumer protection laws in Kentucky and seeks penalties for non-compliance.

While Coleman expressed a willingness to negotiate with Roblox for a resolution, the company reaffirmed its commitment to online safety and expressed openness to discussions to clarify its safety initiatives. The ongoing legal battle underscores the need for stringent measures to safeguard minors in the digital realm.
