A mother, attributing her exhaustion and leg bruises to parenting responsibilities, was shocked to discover she had a rare blood disorder. Lynn McCarthy was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a condition where the body fails to produce enough blood cells, putting her at risk of internal bleeding. Following a friend’s urging, she sought medical help after experiencing fatigue and unexplained bruises. This led to her hospitalization at Cork University Hospital, where she underwent extensive testing and treatment.
Despite being a healthy individual prior to this, Lynn’s platelet count was alarmingly low at six upon admission, well below the normal range of 150-450. She emphasized the importance of not ignoring seemingly minor symptoms that could indicate a serious underlying condition. During her month-long hospital stay, she underwent various tests and treatments to address the failing bone marrow.
Reflecting on her experience, Lynn highlighted the anxiety and challenges she faced, especially being away from her children and navigating strict infection control measures.
