The Davis Cup final is set to happen on Sunday, featuring a showdown between Spain and Italy for the coveted championship. However, earlier this year, the prestigious tournament faced controversy when Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin were involved in an on-court altercation.

The incident occurred during the first round of qualifying between Belgium and Chile in February. Bergs, a Belgian player, inadvertently knocked Garin of Chile to the ground while celebrating a break of serve.

Following the collision, Garin opted not to continue the match despite being examined by a doctor. Consequently, Garin received penalties, leading to Belgium being declared the winner.

Garin expressed disappointment over the decision not to suspend the match, especially as the momentum seemed to favor Belgium after Bergs took the lead with a break in the third set.

The clash between Bergs and Garin happened as Bergs, in a moment of celebration, unintentionally collided with Garin while heading towards his bench. Garin was promptly assessed by an independent doctor.

Although cleared to resume playing by the International Tennis Federation, Garin declined to continue. As a result, he incurred time violation penalties, leading to Belgium’s ultimate victory.

In response to the incident, the ITF released a statement emphasizing the careful consideration of all circumstances and rules involved in the decision-making process.

Further controversy ensued when Garin shared a photo on Instagram showing what appeared to be a black eye and criticized the ITF’s handling of the situation.

Bergs received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the umpire acknowledging the incident as an unfortunate accident.

Addressing the incident, Bergs expressed regret over the unintended collision and apologized to Garin and his team, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

The match concluded in an unexpected manner, leaving both players and officials with mixed emotions.
