A woman shared her frightening experience of facial paralysis that occurred after she consumed a cup of tea shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Karina Whyte, aged 30, welcomed her daughter Mackenzie Whyte on August 8. However, just 10 days later, she noticed her lips going numb and the left side of her face drooping while drinking tea.

Initially, Karina suspected an allergic reaction but feared it might be a stroke. Hospital tests ruled out both and diagnosed her with Bell’s palsy, a condition causing temporary weakness or lack of movement affecting one side of the face, as per the NHS.

Following the diagnosis, Karina received a five-day steroid treatment for the palsy. She now faces challenges like water dribbling from her lips when drinking, and she even tapes her left eye shut during sleep. Karina described the shock of dealing with facial paralysis while adjusting to postpartum recovery.

Living in Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland, Karina expressed her struggles as a new mother with self-confidence issues compounded by the facial paralysis incident. She shared her experience on TikTok, garnering over 100,000 views, highlighting the added difficulties of being a single mother with a toddler.

Despite the physical discomfort and inconveniences caused by Bell’s palsy, Karina remains positive and aims to raise awareness about the condition. She emphasized the importance of maintaining routines, facing challenges day by day, and not letting the condition hinder daily activities or public interactions.

While assured by doctors of recovery, Karina acknowledges the lingering fear of uncertainty. She hopes her story provides encouragement and support to others facing similar challenges. NHS Scotland notes Bell’s palsy as a prevalent form of facial paralysis in the UK, with symptoms including facial weakness or drooping on one side.
