Monty Panesar and Steve Smith found themselves unexpectedly entangled in a confrontation just before the Ashes series began. Smith cleverly brought up the ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal during a press conference, drawing attention to Panesar’s remarks about the incident that rocked Australian cricket.

Panesar had suggested that England should target Smith emotionally, questioning his ethics and fair play as a captain. Smith, who was at the center of the sandpaper controversy in 2018, responded by referencing a humorous TV show appearance by Panesar to downplay the impact of the comments made against him.

Having been stripped of the Australian captaincy due to his involvement in the scandal, Smith is now back leading the team for the upcoming Test in Perth. Panesar, a former England spinner, retaliated, highlighting that everyone makes mistakes, likening his quiz show blunder to Smith’s on-field misstep.

The Ashes series is set to kick off in Perth with England likely to adopt a pace-heavy bowling strategy. Despite including off-spinner Shoaib Bashir in the squad, he is expected to be omitted from the final playing XI.
