Former FBI director appointed by Donald Trump criticized a television news network as an “a** clown factory” in a highly erratic online outburst. The dispute arose from a report on MSNBC regarding an agent dismissed for refusing to facilitate a public arrest of former director James Comey, pursued by the FBI at Trump’s request for alleged false statements to Congress.

Reports suggest that the FBI leadership sought a dramatic arrest of Comey, requesting robust agents in full tactical gear for the operation. However, when asked to assemble the team, supervisory special agent Chris Ray declined, deeming it inappropriate for a white-collar case like Comey’s. Consequently, he was reportedly suspended for insubordination.

The incident prompted MSNBC legal analyst Barb McQuade to highlight Department of Justice policy prohibiting “perp walks,” where arrestees are paraded for the media. In response, Kash Patel, overseeing the FBI for Trump, endorsed the story of Agent Ray’s removal in a sensationalistic and inaccurate social media post, disparaging MSNBC.

Perp walks, often staged for media attention, involve showcasing detainees in custody while being escorted to a legal facility. Patel’s post referenced individuals like Roger Stone, Peter Navarro, and Steve Bannon, insinuating they were subjected to perp walks, although only Bannon faced such treatment, unrelated to FBI actions.

Peter Navarro, not perp walked by the FBI, was arrested for disregarding a subpoena and later sentenced to jail. Roger Stone’s arrest, captured by media during a warrant service, did not involve a perp walk by the FBI. Stone faced charges of witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and false statements, ultimately receiving a pardon from Trump.

Steve Bannon, convicted of fraud, was perp walked in a separate state case, not by the FBI.
