Renowned analyst Sir John Curtice has suggested that Kemi Badenoch remains largely unknown to the public, and the Conservative Party has a history of failing to fulfill promises on immigration issues.

According to Sir John, the public’s perception of the Conservatives soured following controversies like Partygate and Liz Truss’s problematic mini-budget. He noted that Badenoch struggled to prevent a decline in support, especially with the rise of opposition from Nigel Farage’s Reform party.

In a recent interview with the Mirror before the Conservative party conference in Manchester, Sir John raised doubts about Badenoch’s effectiveness in handling challenges from Reform and engaging with the public. He questioned whether another leader could fare better and emphasized the importance of charisma in leadership.

These observations come shortly after a YouGov MRP poll forecasted a modest outcome for the Tories in the upcoming general election. Sir John highlighted the party’s struggle to maintain popularity post-Brexit and the increasing competition from Reform, making it difficult for them to assert their stance on diversity and counter Farage’s influence.

Sir John suggested that Badenoch’s conference speech could be an opportunity to boost her public profile, but he cautioned that a comeback in the next year’s elections might be an uphill battle due to her lack of recognition among the wider audience.

He underscored the issue of visibility, stating that while Badenoch enjoys popularity within Conservative circles, her low visibility among the general public poses a significant challenge. Sir John emphasized the need for Badenoch to increase her presence as a minister and party leader to gain broader recognition.

Additionally, Sir John highlighted the tough task for the Tories to compete with Reform on immigration issues, given their past track record. He pointed out the challenge of establishing a tougher position than Reform while also building trust with the public, considering the party’s perceived history of unfulfilled promises on immigration matters.
