Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has criticized pro-Palestine demonstrators as “un-British” for rallying shortly after the Manchester synagogue assault. Ms. Mahmood described the protesters as “dishonorable” and expressed her wish for them to refrain. The attack resulted in the deaths of Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, with three others hospitalized due to severe injuries.

A large number of individuals gathered in central London and various cities in the UK to protest following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla and the subsequent detention of those onboard, including activist Greta Thunberg. Ms. Mahmood expressed disappointment over the protests, labeling the behavior as “fundamentally un-British” and “dishonorable.”

“I would have preferred if those participants had taken a step back. The underlying issues fueling these protests have persisted for some time and show no signs of resolution anytime soon,” Ms. Mahmood remarked. “They could have shown some compassion by allowing the grieving community a day or two to process the tragic events that unfolded. It is disheartening that no humanity or solidarity was extended to our Jewish community.”

The Metropolitan Police reported 40 arrests in connection with the demonstrations, which included clashes with law enforcement near Downing Street. Online posts also called for protests at 18 other locations across the UK.

Terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie was fatally shot by police after targeting worshippers at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester just before 9:30 a.m. The incident occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. When asked about her advice to the Jewish community, Ms. Mahmood emphasized the importance of resuming normal daily activities.

“I understand that after such a devastating attack, people may be hesitant about their actions. I want to reassure our Jewish community that we have allocated adequate policing resources and are closely collaborating with the Community Security Trust to ensure their safety and freedom to carry on with their daily routines,” stated the Home Secretary. “I urge people to continue with their normal lives. While fear may exist, I want Jewish individuals in our country to feel empowered to practice their faith, visit their communal institutions, and live without restriction.”

“We are committed to taking all necessary measures to guarantee their safety and well-being.”
