A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Athelston Mayers, is commemorating his 37th birthday today, October 3. Recently, some individuals have started to grasp the significance behind the stage name of this renowned US rapper.

The artist, currently romantically involved with Rihanna, took inspiration from the legendary American rapper Rakim, known for hits such as When I Be On Tha Mic, Guess Who’s Back, and It’s Been A Long Time. A$AP Rocky delved into rap at the young age of nine, following the guidance of his elder brother. Tragically, at 13, his brother met a fatal end in Harlem, New York, prompting A$AP Rocky to pursue rap more seriously.

In 2007, he became part of the A$AP Mob collective, a group comprising rappers, producers, music video directors, and other talents. Each member of the crew adopted A$AP as a prefix to their stage names, sparking curiosity among fans about the meaning behind A$AP and Rocky.

According to a statement on American Songwriter, the moniker was conceived when A$AP Rocky and his crew were in New York City. The crew, known as A$AP Mob, symbolizes ‘Always Strive and Prosper.’ Additionally, “Rocky” was a childhood nickname given by his mother, culminating in a memorable rap persona.

Following the leak of his single Peso in 2011, A$AP Rocky secured a deal with Polo Grounds Music and released his debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP. The mixtape received critical acclaim, leading to a lucrative $3 million record deal and the release of his debut studio album, Long. Live. A$AP, in 2013, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart and later achieved gold certification by the RIAA.

Subsequently, A$AP Rocky’s career soared with a series of releases, collaborations, and tours, particularly after the success of his debut album. His most recent album, Testing, hit the shelves in 2018, entering the Billboard 200 chart at No. 4.

In a 2021 interview with GQ, the rapper confirmed his relationship with singer Rihanna, and the couple is now parents to three children: RZA Athelston Mayers, 3, Riot Rose Mayers, 2, and Rocki Irish Mayers, just a month old.

Reflecting on A$AP Rocky’s stage name, a Reddit user admitted, “It took me way too long to realize ASAP stands for Always Strive And Prosper,” while another user echoed the sentiment, saying, “Just now realized this too.”
