Another Conservative politician, Nadhim Zahawi, has left the party to join Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Zahawi, a former Cabinet Minister known for his role in the Covid vaccine rollout, was dismissed from the Government for breaching the ministerial code related to his tax affairs. He later paid a substantial sum to HMRC as part of the resolution.

Zahawi has faced past controversies, including claiming electricity bills for his stables on expenses and attending a men-only gala with allegations of misconduct. Despite his wealthy background and business connections, which could attract donors to Reform, Zahawi’s switch to the party may raise questions about their anti-establishment stance.

The defection of Zahawi has stirred tensions within the Conservative Party, with reports suggesting he sought a peerage before joining Reform, an accusation he denies. Zahawi’s move aligns him with other Boris Johnson loyalists who have switched to Reform, indicating a lack of confidence in Johnson’s political future.

In his announcement, Zahawi criticized the state of the country, blaming past Tory leadership for its condition. Whether the public will view Reform as the solution remains uncertain.
