A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests that consuming seven to eight cups of tea, coffee, and water daily may reduce the risk of mortality. However, it is crucial to strike the right balance between these beverages as excessive intake was associated with an elevated risk of heart problems.

The study emphasizes that previous research mainly compared different consumption levels of coffee and tea, lacking a clear interpretation of the health benefits due to the absence of specific guidelines on beverage substitutions and dosages.

While the benefits of adequate water intake are well-known, researchers were interested in exploring the effects of tea and coffee consumption. Analyzing data from 182,770 UK adults, the study found that individuals who consumed a mix of tea, coffee, and water in the range of seven to eight drinks per day had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality and specific diseases like certain cancers and cardiovascular issues.

In particular, a daily ratio of coffee to tea at 2:3 was identified as the most protective combination, lowering the risk of death from various causes. Substituting plain water with coffee or tea when consuming more than four drinks per day was linked to reduced mortality, but exceeding nine drinks daily was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

The researchers recommend focusing on adequate fluid intake, aiming for around seven to eight drinks daily for optimal health benefits. Once sufficient fluid intake is achieved, replacing plain water with a blend of coffee and tea is advised. Consuming less than four drinks daily did not show life-extending benefits from coffee or tea consumption.

Although the study had limitations in establishing a causal relationship between beverage consumption and reduced mortality, the findings underscore the importance of a balanced intake of coffee, tea, and water to promote overall health. Researchers suggest providing more explicit guidance on beverage combinations to individuals for better health outcomes.
