UK fighter jets have commenced their inaugural NATO policing mission over Poland following Russian violations of the country’s airspace. The jets, known as RAF Typhoons, departed from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on Friday night to provide additional air defense over the eastern European nation. The mission, dubbed “Eastern Sentry,” involved patrolling near Belarusian and Russian airspace.
The operation took place days after Russian drones intruded into Polish airspace and amidst similar incidents in Romania and Estonia. The UK, along with other NATO countries such as Denmark, France, and Germany, is actively patrolling the eastern flank. During the mission, the fighter jets successfully refueled mid-air from a Voyager aircraft without any complications, demonstrating enhanced cooperation and readiness among NATO allies.
The Voyager aircraft delivered 27.4 tonnes of fuel to the Typhoon jets, facilitating their continued patrol over Poland. The Defense Secretary emphasized the UK’s commitment to defending NATO airspace and supporting Poland’s security. The Chief of the Air Staff highlighted the RAF’s operational success in bolstering NATO defense and deterrence while underscoring the alliance’s readiness to project airpower effectively.
This joint NATO operation reflects the strong partnership between the UK and its allies in safeguarding European airspace and deterring potential threats.
